With just a couple ingredients offered from your local market you can clean up carpet stains at a fraction of the cost. When it comes to cleaning carpet stains, a box of arm&hammer washing soda, liquid dish soap, white vinegar, and a wet/dry shop vac works wonders!

Lets say you have a red wine stain on your carpet. Unless you have wool or cotton carpet, this simple homemade detergent will do the trick. Most homes have nylon or polyester carpet, also called synthetic carpet, these fibers are much more durable than organics such as wool, cotton or jute. Frist soak up as much of the spill as possible with a cotton clothe. Cotton is super absorbant which is why it works so well. In a spray bottle add 1 or 2 tbsp of washing soda to a cup of hot water. shake until powder is dissolved. Add 1/4 tsp liquid dish soap to the solution. Spray cleaner on stain but do not saturate. Let chemical sit 10 to 15 minutes while gently agitating in a clockwise rotation with a brush or towel. Do not rub or scrub as it will distort the carpet fiber. After the dwell time, use a wet/dry shop vac to extract the spent chemical from the carpet. Then add 1 tbsp of white vinegar to 1 cup hot water - the hotter the better! Spray on stained area and extract. Repeat until stain is gone. Viola!

How it works: Washing soda is actually called sodium carbonate, which is an alkaline base ingredient for most detergents. The wine is an acid-based stain as are most stains. Similar to that vinegar & baking soda experiment in the 5th grade, they break each other down. Here's the cool part. The dish soap consists of surfactant and surfactant is WHERE IT'S AT! Sorry to Beck on you ,but this stuff is cool! Surfactant not only makes water wetter, but acts as a link between polar and non-polar molecules. Ever mix water and oil together? They resist each other right? When surfactant (dish soap) is added, it's molecules have both polar and non-polar ends so it links the oil and water together as one fluid. The surfactant makes the water wetter so it has lower surface tension - kind of like a slimy fish out of water. The white vinegar solution neutralizes the spent alkaline cleaner so your carpet returns to being fluffy and soft. Cautionary Note: washing soda can irritate the skin. I recommend using rubber gloves and protective eye wear.

As you can tell I like detergents! You'll notice less pet odors coming from your carpet as the humidity levels drop in the atmosphere.

Pet urine causes homeowners thousands of dollars every year - not to mention obnoxious odors that make homeowners and guests cringe whenever passing through a contaminated area. Not only is the carpet stained but the odors that permeate the air remind us of a late night bathroom stop at a small town truck stop.

Dog urine and pet odors are an issue of the pad and not the carpet. When Fido pops a squat, the urine puddles on the carpet for a moment then gets obsorbed into the carpet pad as the pad is equavenalnt to a sponge. The urine eventually evaporates leaving behind concentraded amounts of salt and bacteria in it's place. If you've ever sipped concentraed lemon juice from a lemon-shaped bottle, you probably understand just how potent the dried urine is...and it's Not From Concentrate!

Back to the carpet pad - The semi-dried urine contains salt that is always thirsty. This is why you typically notice pet odors on the second floor where humidity gathers first. The urine salt obsorbs the moisture which then wafts its odors up into the air

Now that you know the basics of pet odors, lets talk about remediation. A quick walk through your local grocier's pet isle, you'll notice that most of the shelf bought cleaners cater to the visual stain as opposed to the odors caused by dog urine. If the dog urine and pet odors are coming from the pad, then why treat the surface? Whether it's a misinformed customer or capitalism at its worst, cleaning the surface does nothing for removing pet urine odors! We recommend a three step approach that is effective at removing old urine spots form your carpet.

Please feel free to call or email us if you attempt this at home. We will guide you through the steps, or you can have us do it - either way, the pet urine odor will not go away on it's own. And if you decide to wait it out, you might want to grab a snickers because it's not going anywhere for a long while! We first find each dog urine spot with a florescent black light. You can purchase this light at any home improvement stores. You'll likely want to do this step at night as it's easier to see the spots. Note: get ready to be shocked at what you might find. We've seen carpets completely covered with dog urine that was not visible in normal light. After marking all the spots with pennies or paper scraps, use a comparable amount of hot water mixed with distilled white vinegar to saturate the urine spot(s). The typical house dog ways fifteen to thirty pounds, which is about a cup or two of urine. Mix two tablespoons of vinegar per cup of hot water and pour over the urine deposit. Use a wet/dry shop vac to remove the cleaning solution after it sits about 15 to 20 minutes. The distilled white vinegar contains acedic acid which breaks down the salt crystals created by the urine bacteria. After removing the liquids, use a meat syringe to inject enzymes into the carpet pad where the urine was. You can purchase liquid enzymes engineered for pet odors at most pet stores. We suggest 5 milliliters of enzyme every 3 to 5 inches apart. As for the remaining stain, we suggest you call a local carpet cleaning professional for removal. The chemicals involved to remove urine stains are harsh and can cause discomfort if handled incorrectly.

We hope you've enjoyed our pet odor and dog urine removal process by Nashville EverClean Carpet Cleaning.
